Sea World is a big theme park in San Diego with lots of dolphins and killer whales. But coming here reminds me of depression!
How do you figure that?
Well, it’s because of the whole structure of Sea World. They have killer whales and dolphins that they’ve trained to do these tricks, like jump through hoops, kiss the trainers, and other things to entertain the audience.
Fact is that killer whales are exactly that: killers. In fact, they are the top predators in the sea. They feed on seals, sea lions, walruses, and other similar sea creatures. In short, the trainers at Sea World have taken animals that are meant to be predators and trained them to perform tricks.
But this is not their true nature.
This is similar to the way that people are conditioned to be depressed. When you were a child child, you learned to behave a certain way based your environment. As a child, you didn’t have the wisdom to filter out the stuff that may not be in your best interest to hear. Instead, you absorb everything for better or worse.
For example, if your parent is an alcoholic, then you learned to tip-toe around them, in case they’re drunk or they’re in one of their moods. They’re unpredictable and they may lash out at you. This conditioning tends to stay with you throughout your life and become part of your adult life.
You’ve been trained to behave and react in a certain way to the environment. If somebody reminds you of a caregiver who mistreated or abused you, then you’re likely going to react to the situation the same way that you did as a child.
In reality, to cure depression without medication is based a lot on your ability to become aware of the conditioning that you received in childhood. Putting yourself down, feeling like a victim, and other negative thoughts, occur when you are reminded of negative events from your childhood. As a result, you become depressed.
In searching for how to cure depression, you may have considered taking anti-depressants, but the pills are not going to change the negative thoughts in your mind. Maybe they will change your brain chemistry, but the causes of depression go beyond brain chemistry. They have more to do with the conditioning that you received as a child and the physiological reactions that you have to those memories.
For example, certain smells, body movements, and social situations may remind you of bad childhood experiences. As a result, you are going to have that visceral feeling in your body and mind due to the emotions that you are experiencing at that moment. The most important thing is to figure out what kind of conditioning you received as a child and to learn what triggers the reaction that’s particular to you.
In my own search to cure depression without medication, I used a three step formula that I want to share with you. First of all, you have to have a very strong desire to break free of the depression. Then, you have to discover what that is stopping, which is usually this childhood conditioning. Awareness of what upsets you will help you overcome it. Take the time to notice what makes you feel depressed. Ask yourself the following questions: What is that trigger? What’s the inner conversation that’s happening in your mind? How does your body react?
As soon as you’ve discovered this, then you can begin to change this conditioning and do something different. However, you need to know what it is that’s causing you to be depressed in the first place. You need to understand that there is this inner conversation that occurs in response to external events. This is an on-going conversation. For some, this consists of automatic negative thoughts, such as “I can’t do anything right” or “I’ll never be good enough.”
Beating depression involves your realizing that all of this negative self-talk is just conditioning. The first step to moving past it is to become aware of when you are doing it. Next, you need to figure out what it is that you’re saying to yourself and how it’s making you feel. Then, you need to change it into something more positive and empowering. Trying writing down negative thoughts when they occur and, eventually, you will notice that patterns emerge. In time, you will see that this is simply part of your training, like the killer whales at Sea World who do tricks.
Work to understand exactly what’s going on in your mind when you feel depressed. Once you gain this insight, you can start to change your thoughts and your conditioning. When you change your conditioning, you can overcome depression.
